I think they are markers some tell you different things like road signs. Maybe the teepee ones are saying some live near. X means no trespassing, multiple sticks in a line means a family. Not so much telling you how many but that more than one is there. Think the tree snapping of limbs are to lead people away from they’re real homes. A place they will go watch you but not too close to where they live. By now they know people are watching and tracking them.
